TEXT IN ENGLISH (o texto em Portugues está mais abaixo)
Literally: Tequila can be converted into diamonds - Three Mexican physicists, J. Morales, L.M. Apátiga and V.M. Castaño discovered that tequila, the most popular alcoholic drink in Mexico, under special -and not so extreme- conditions, can be converted into tiny diamond grains. The process involves the PLI-CVD (Pulsed Liquid Injection Chemical Vapor Deposition) technique in two stages: (i) the gasification of the liquid tequila at 280 ºC (536 ºF) followed by (ii) the reaction in a chamber kept at 800 ºC (1470 ºF) to break down the carbon molecular structure. The result is the formation of diamond crystals of about 100-400 nm. The crystals form an uniform thin layer on a silicon or stainless steel surface. Despite the small dimension of the particles, for jewelry purposes, they have gigantic applications in industry. Our nanotechnology group at Federal University of Minas gerais - Brazil - is working hard to find the ideal conditions to turn cachaça, the most popular Brazilian alcoholic drink (and cheaper than tequila), into diamonds.
